Special Education Programs and Services
Minneapolis Public Schools offers a wide-range of Special Education programs and services. To receive special education services, a student must first be evaluated and meet state criteria. Once qualified, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed for the student. Programs and services may be provided to students beginning at birth through age 21 or completion of a secondary education program. Special education is also available for students that attend nonpublic schools. For children not yet in school, if you have concerns about your child's development, call 612-348-TOTS for a screening. To request a comprehnsive evaluation for students attending school, put your request in writing to the teacher and school principal. Keep a copy of your written request. The school will then meet with you to discuss your concerns. Interventions and progress monitoring in the regular education setting are recommended prior to evaluation for special education.
Parent Involvement Opportunities
The Special Education Department hosts the Special Ed Advisory Council, SEAC. The SEAC is comprised of parents and staff who work together on evaluating policy and planning in the district. SEAC meetings are open for all.
