The definition of Assistive Technology is very broad indeed. One item used by many students with poor hand function is the foam egg pencil grip. They cost about $3 each, but at the Assistive Technology Center one of our volunteers is a master wood turner. If you can turn wood, you can turn foam! He has designed a process where he and the other volunteers can produce these grips from scraps. Foam “m” shaped blocks used on other equipment generate the scraps that become pencil grips for students. We are currently experimenting with other shapes for grips as well.
