Welcome to the start of a new school year and another run of #ATCTuesday! It is also the start of the school year for the University of Minnesota and their Mechanical Engineering program. In the past staff of the ATC have served as project advisors for senior mechanical engineering students, and we are doing so again this year. ATC comes up with a design challenge for the seniors and they build it. They focus on a unique need for our students and then complete a design that we can replicate in our workshop in the future. And we tap the brain power of folks around the city as well.
This photo shows the U of M team visiting Blue Sky Designs and their CEO rehabilitation engineer Dianne Goodwin to get tips on how to mount equipment on power wheelchairs. Blue Sky Designs is a Minneapolis based company that makes a wide variety of equipment for individuals with special needs. The U of M seniors have until December to complete their work. We have challenged them to make an item that can be used in adaptive sports by students who use power wheelchairs, but you are just going to have to wait to find out exactly what it is! No letting the cat out of the bag until December, so keep following @MPS_specialedu to catch more #ATCTuesday stories!
